Cycle route and Dobbies

With regard to the new Dobbies on Lang Stracht and the lack of thought as to how this integrates with the cycle lane:

Ignoring the fact that the construction was allowed to close the cycle lane for over 2 months, leaving cyclists to find a way of turning right across the path of traffic doing 50 mph without getting killed...there seems to have been no thought given as to how cyclists are meant to get across the entrance to the new Dobbies.  During the day and early evening there is often a line of tightly packed cars waiting to come out (who don't see why they should let a cyclist through) and a steady stream of cars turning in (who don't even notice a cyclist and see no reason not to seize the opportunity of a gap in the traffic to blast in at speed).  Between the two of us, we received lengthy 3 blasts of a horn crossing this today (1 possibly warranted)

Whilst neither cyclists not drivers are overly familiar with the highway code, this does appear to be an accident waiting to happen, as drivers and cyclists get more belligerent about their supposed rights.  Can KCC and ACC please clarify what they expect to happen at this junction and whether they really think taking a quiet cycle lane, and turning it into a confrontation with traffic every day, contributes to a policy which claims to encourage people not using their cars?

Thanks

Are there still problems?

Are there still problems with the cycle lane near Dobbies

The 2 junctions further east

The 2 junctions further east from Dobbies that lead into Cockers property have the same problem.

The council in their wisdom gave priority to cars coming out of the junctions instead of cyclists on the path!!

Its very clear that the people that make these decisions dont own a bike!!

Cyle route and Dobbies suggestion

Thanks for getting back to me - happy to either post my suggestions here, directly to a KCC member or at the meeting.

There are a couple of fairly easy solutions that I can see: either place the dashed white stop line, which presumably really means "cross this line and you lose priority," a little further back from the exit - 2 metres would be sufficient to allow cyclists through but not impede visibility for cars exiting; or do as has been done on Westburn Road (by Mount Street I believe) wherein the pink / orange cycle lane strip simply continues straight across the adjoining road, showing drivers that cyclists are likely to be there.  I would favour the second solution, where a cycle route passage is drawn across the junction and links up to the cycle lanes on either side.  This won't stop cyclists from having to be careful and slow right down, but may go some way to avoiding cyclists being faced with an impenetrable wall of cars and no apparent rights to obtain passage through.

Thanks again

Another Suggestion

A suggestion was made at the meeting to have a cycles only area at the junction - the type that you see at traffic lights. This would keep the traffic back from the junction. I asked Peter Stephen to identify the problem to ACC, so we will have to wait to see what they will recommend.

I will let you know when I know more.

Many thanks for taking up the matter, much appreciated - I had emailed ACC but, as per normal, have not received comment back from them.

Do you have any

Do you have any suggestions?

Would a sign (Beware cyclsts crossing) on the Dobbies side of the junction assist in creating a gap in the traffic exiting Dobbies, or a least make drivers aware of the possibility of cyclists?

It would be good if you could attend a KCC meeting on the 2nd Monday of each month to discuss, or call any KCC member.
